Abstract: A contemporary home known as Stack House has entered the market for the first time.

"The architect coined the term and it has been in a number of magazines," explains Barry Berg, listing agent for Coldwell Banker Real Estate, which includes Dwell.

"As he was designing the house and understanding how it would naturally lie on the site, he found himself stacking cubes on top of each other to achieve a stacking effect," Berg says.

The 3,323-square-foot, three-storey home in Minneapolis is listed for $2.195 million.

The current owners tore down another home and purposely designed the space, which was completed in 2016.

"To take advantage of the [lake] view and the fact that the site is somewhat vertical, the main living level of the house is on the second level off the street," explains Berg." The south-facing light means you really get the best of all the natural light coming into the home."

The listing calls the structure a "tree house".

"It's basically in the trees," says Berg." Because of the site's elevation and natural topography, the main level opens up to the backyard and is surrounded by beautiful, mature trees. When you're at home and the leaves are on the trees, you feel like you're in a tree house."

The design includes a built-in performance space, reflecting the passion of one of the sellers, who was a piano major in college.

"It's what [the owners] call their piano room," says Berg, "and it's on high ground overlooking the great room with great acoustics." They love to entertain, especially by making music a major part of their entertainment."

The kitchen and main living spaces, including a great room with high ceilings and fireplace walls, are on the second level.

The three bedrooms and two bathrooms are on the upper level, with the open area overlooking the lower level.

"I love the light, I love the openness of it and I love the fresh design," says Berg." It's really designed the way many people like it now, in a large loft flat with high ceilings and really making the most of the square footage.

There's a two-car garage and a separate flat on the lowest level.

"It has its own entrance on the ground floor and is a one-bedroom unit," explains Berg.

The flat is perfect for guests, staff or multi-generational family arrangements.

Berg adds that the clean lines and natural light are the features that really stand out.

"I love the brightness of the flat, it's built with very good materials so it's nicely appointed," he says. "It is sophisticated, but not fussy", he says.
